I found the book hard going at first and then just accepted the style in which it was written and went along for the ride. I had to accept that some sentences could be difficult to understand at first reading, although it was not the first stream of consciousness book that I had read (i.e. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which I had difficulty finishing). However, in this case I began to appreciate the beauty of the prose and the way that my own memories of life were awakened. The book describes human nature with all its faults, failings, hopes, joy and sadness. As I progressed, I fell in love with the book and the style in which it is written.
