As a die-hard fan of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho. I came into the show with a fair amount of skepticism. Not only because live-action adaptations of anime are so difficult to render but also because vital plot points are often overlooked by production teams and writers. It seemed, based on the trailer, that they were going to skip the Rando arc and Saint Beasts arc and came in with that expectation. But to later learn they also skipped possibly one of the greatest tournament arcs in all of Shonen Anime: the Dark Tournament. I was peeved. But I let it go for the sake of redeeming character development and progression. If you can call it that.
There was seemingly no actual character development which was such an important piece of the anime. Yusuke's character was seemingly stoic from episode 1 to episode 5. His anime counterpart was a brash smartass with a hot temper, and these character points were less apparent than I would have liked. His wall between him and his compassion is what should have been emphasized. Not every emotion. Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara were done alright. Especially Kuwabara. All in all, if the production team and writers had paced the first season as they should have and given the characters more depth, it would have the potential to be great.
