I would've given this film a higher review if some of the pop culture references weren't as forced. Free Guy included several cameos of popular online influencers (Pokemane, Jacksepticeye and Dantdm) and even Chris Evans near the end too. This film isn't a kids movie and it made me cringe when trends like 'the floss' that died out FIVE years ago made an appearance. Whoever put that in needs to get their head out of 2017.
Another reason I would've put a higher review that isn't out of pettiness is one of our leads, Millie. She was our only female main character out of three and yet they completely diminished her righteousness that we found at the start and turned her in to a mushy love interest which the majority of the female audience will not be pleased about. And if someone says 'women aren't the target audience' have clearly forgotten that game enthusiasts can be women, and i'm sure that this films target audience is game freaks like me.
Other than that, the CGI was amazing and despite cringing a few times, I did find this film quite amusing and there was not one moment where I was not bored. Free Guy is quite like the Truman Show, with Guy becoming self aware of the fact he's living in the video game. I loved the concept of AI developing as things with their own personalities and opinions, and I quite like a few of the references made. My personal favourite was when Guy pulls out Captain America's shield!
This film is worth the money and I'll probably watch it again if it comes to streaming services.
