The Barbie movie was one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. As teen girls we are shamed, embarrassed, slut-shamed, fat-shamed, feeling always as if we can never measure up to anybody's expectations. After I had watched this movie I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I felt closure.
society is a social construct. A wall many women have tried to climb. Why should I change my body, my features, my skin color? just to please someone that does not see my self-worth in any way. As a woman why should I have an opinion? As a woman why should even dare to speak up? As a woman why should I have any respect for my body, mind, and soul? Why should I even feel that my own body is mine?
This movie made me feel loved.
For the longest time, I have been seeing the world as shades of grey. And now I see it in shades of pink. You are loved. You are respected, you are worth it. And it's about damn time we see ourselves as more than just an object of someone's desires, more than a trophy for someone to place on a shelf and let slowly let it rust. Because we are the creators of life. We are goddesses that walk the earth and leave our divine blessings for others to roll in.
I believe we are all equal. And to those that think men were being shamed. You are truly selfish. For once women are treated as the main character and not as the side character. And guess what? it feels pretty great to feel accepted and loved as you are. Men are told in this movie not to be afraid to show their feelings, to express themselves, and to discover parts of themselves that society has denied.
So to the people that say "This movie is an assault on all men." Please think before you speak. Because to others, this movie made us feel understood. This movie sparks millions of women to communicate with one another about their experiences, their stories, and their struggles with society.
So the next time you speak about this movie think about your daughter, your sister, your mother, your auntie, your grandma, or whoever is a part of your life that deals with the struggle of being a woman. I hope you look at yourself in the mirror, take a hard look, and just think.
Listen to yourself. Now listen to somebody else's story. I hope you find the closure that everyone deserves. And when you will take responsibility for your words that pierce others.
