No. Hard. Feelings.
From a quick glance at the trailer this film promised to be hilarious albeit on abit of a creepy premise. As it turns out, I barely laughed at all, I just had this uncomfortable feeling of horror and discomfort as I watched the film unfold. Lawrence herself seems unaware, stressed and uneasy playing the role herself which understandably results in a forced performance. I think there are important issues being portrayed in the film which need to be addressed, however it is done in a woman hating way.
The premise of the film is essentially a paid for grooming service except their son is the dog and Jen is the handler. Most of the population are probably aware that much older men 'date' much younger, innocent females all the time, I mean I guess kudos for breaking the typecast and representing minority stats.
Another thing I found distasteful is how Jlaw is in her beautiful prime but keeps getting told by most of the cast that she is 'old' despite her clearly stunning doll like looks, I also felt it was unnecessary to have her running around stark naked and belly flopping the sand for all the cast to see her bossom and privates. Especially demoralising after recently having had a baby I'd imagine.
There were a few genuinely sweet coming of age moments which taught me about what I missed out on by not dating in my teens or going to prom. The lobster dinner scene appears to reinforce misogynistic attitudes towards women and the boys pernicious position of entitlement, where he leaves in a strop.
She is clearly too good for most of the clingy loser men in the town who are attempting to entrap her into commitment, when really the only thing keeping her there is unresolved psychological and nostalgic reasons.
Watch if you want to learn about grooming and why it's wrong and how society discriminates against women.
