A great book, but the show does not capture its beauty. First of all, the cinematic experience is terrible. It is dark, hard to see, physically impossible to watch. I guess it was meant as a tool to make the viewer feel depressed, but I find such trickery a result of poor mastery. Secondly, one has to seriously suspend disbelief. Half of Russians were black people? I value diversity, but why was it needed at all here? Russia at the beginning of 20th century was far from diverse, well, it is far from diverse even now. In words of Stanislavsky, I do not believe!
