Skip to the end for thoughts
I want so badly to say this is a 10/10 experience and for the first hour or so it was. The unfortunate thing is, SPOILER: after shoukos attempted suicide it turns into a sort of conflict circle and that's the focus of the rest of the movie. It was incredible how good the representation is, and It teaches about the struggles of deaf people in a way that's far from intrusive. I didn't know that loud sounds can hurt deaf peoples ears the same way blind people wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. I like the main character's plight but I wish they put more emphasis on the social anxiety. And for good measure SPOILER: it has an ambiguous ending as to if they get together or not. It is talked about a decent amount but never explicitly shown and that is disturbing considering this boy threw himself off a building for her.
All things thoroughly considered I think that this film is incredible nonetheless if you're willing to tolerate the slight misfocus.
