Archer is in a coma people. The past three seasons are dreams occurring in his mind. It gave the writers freedom to explore other avenues of the show and show the characters in different ways. I do agree the show needs desperately to get back to its original roots, and wrap up appropriately or at the least give us a season or two of Old Archer before calling it quits. Just for fodder i will add that Archer Vice is one of my favorite seasons.
