Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a game that looks sleek in presentation upon first glance but the more you dive into this game and its mechanics, the more the weak points overpower the good. This is your typical souls-like with expected mechanics and many more unwanted. The games large skill tree aside, most core mechanic โmadnessโ in theory is a neat idea, with certain skills only being accessible above a certain percentage as well as doing and receiving more damage. Where does this fall short? This is NOT an optional mechanic to engage with, the more you die and you will die because this game recycles the same souls games tropes but so much so that it goes from being relatively funny how much they are repeatedly used to utterly ad nauseam well before the credits roll. The game will actively punish you by making you receive more damage, receive maximum madness and die? You are forced to fight an arbitrarily more difficult and skilled clone of yourself in an attempt to regain your lost upgrade resources. Where all good souls games make sure to carefully craft each death and turn it into an actual learning experience not just for whatever your most recent death was but future ones as well, this game doesnโt bother taking that to its design philosophy one bit. There is no learning experiences in this game. Every single death is meant to be in someway just outright frustrating and punishing for the sake of it with zero to learn for it and no reasoning as to why the devs decided to craft an encounter like so. By the halfway mark I was miserable and by the end I was sure Iโd never want to replay this game again. I sincerely urge you as someone whoโs favorite genre is that of souls games, please spend your money on something better and far more enjoyable. First Berserker: Khazan, Black Myth Wukong and ESPECIALLY Lies of P and its phenomenal recently released DLC. This game has good bones and might be better at some point in the future, but I genuinely cannot recommend it at the moment not even taking into account its terrible optimization/performance.
