It may not be the worst TV series ever, but it is an absolutely awful watchmen adaptation. Damon Lindelof has completely butchered the source material for the purposes of forwarding his career and biases political beliefs. The Watchmen HBO series completely abandones the tone and central themes of the graphic novel for what is essentially an SJW power fantasy which pretends to be a heady, self critical analysis of vigilantism and authoritarian liberal goverernments while simultaneously never challenging the beliefs of the main characters and their actions. The police offers and costumed crime fighters which the series follows are little more than stereotypes of liberal and conservatives of the midwest. While every performance In the show is solid and well acted, the character's themselves are nothing more than boring, competent crime fighters who are destined to save the day despite all odds. The only interesting characters to watch are the few who return from the graphic novel, unfortunately their involvement is always short lived or irrelevant for the progression of the actual story. The villains are terribly generic as well, not to mention, completley impotent as far as real threats are concerned. What was once an epic globetrotting tale of multilayered, deep cultural analysis of morality, justice, and the very human ability for self destructive behavior has turned into a small scale police drama about vigilantes, with some watchmen fansevuce thrown in for spice. This show feels small in scale and inconsequential in the world of Watchmen. Not only that but the choice to portray white supremacy as a threat equal to global armageddon is not only laughable but entirely pandering to the kind of softminded Hollywood producers and critics who take every opportunity to virtue signal rather than call out poor execution when they see it. There are so many plot holes, useless characters, moment's of self important dialogue and repetitive editing that this series can be considered better for nothing more than background noise for doing chores. I understand that Lindelof wanted to center the themes of thos show around a more culturally relevant conversation, that being police brutality and racism, but Watchmen is not the story that should be used for discussing these topics. The choice to center this series around cultural injustice and race relations is not only hamfisted, but is entirely self righteous and poorly analyzed. The entire thesis statement of this show is "rasicm is bad" and makes no attempt to say anything else or proffer any intriguing questions, it doesnt challenge the morality of the viewer and retroactively turns every good idea from the graphic novel into a pale imitation of itself. There are a few decent, interesting ideas which keep the show intriguing if you're a hardcore watchmen fan, but unfortunately they are few and far between, shirt lice, and porrly executed.
