My past review was just straight up wrong: this show ROCKS.
Yes, there are MANY faults in the story, the writing, the animation, and let's not even BEGIN to discuss the kick in the face the movie was to long time fans of the series.
But this show is simply amazing. The first 2 seasons and pilot have an overarching theme of brotherhood, and you learn how these 4 guys, one of their sisters, an old dude, and a 10yr old little brat come together to save the world. The little brat turns out to be basically LEGO Jesus, and is destined to defeat "the dark lord" and restore balance to the world. And then you learn that the dark lord... is his DAD! So it's awkward and tragic to see how this little kid has to pretend he doesn't love and care for his Dad, and has to ultimately defeat him in a crazy final battle. And at the same time, his Dad, who has been consumed by evil, battles his evil urges daily, like some kind of horrible addiction. You see how despite this, he still truly loves his son, and hates the man he's become and all the terrible things he's done. He's truly sorry for it all, and this becomes even more apparent in later seasons.
And this is only one facet of the show. I also love how they deal with the idea of there being balance in the world- there cannot be darkness without light; there cannot be light without darkness. The way the show explains this is always unclear, but it is always ringing true, EVEN UNTIL THE VERY LAST SEASON, that the root of all of the issues the team faces is dealing with balance of the universe. Our main team are the forces of good, soldiers of the light, who battle with the evil beings of this world who use ancient magic and weapons, outrageous super powers, immense plot armor, crazy gadgets, and everything in between.
Also, let's not forget this show is HILARIOUS! Wether rewatching the first 2 seasons or the newer ones, the writers always find new and unique ways to spin the simple comedic fact that this is a bunch of teenagers with ancient elemental powers, led by a technically-not-10-year-old and some dude whose thousands of years old as they fight cultists, power mad villians, ancient snake people, sky pirates and a magical pirate genie, skeletons, ghosts, and other general ne'erdowells or vagabonds.
This show will make you laugh, cry, get emotionally involved the the characters and story, until you ultimately become so connected to it that you religiously rewatch it every year.
