The movie is visually appealing, from the costume designing to the jewellery, the charming chandeliers and makeup to what not. Even the sets with a touch of colourful mosaic. Not to forget the setting- pre Independent India. Also, the musical score is really soulful, with the beautiful scintilla of Arijit's, Shreya's, Javed Ali's and other prominent singers' voices. These were seemingly the only things the director paid attention to.
And the background score- beautiful and everything, but it sounded extremely similar to what is played in Game of Thrones and Flash Season 1, the latter being played or composed by Blake Neely.
Don't know if it's oscillating towards plagiarism and creativity instead of pure creativity, but ok.
But, dude, STORY?
I mean, at some places it didn't even make sense. It was a mess, a variety of scenes and ideas had been picked from movies like DDLJ, Pakeezah and so on. The flow was so discontinuous and random, at times the director seemingly got confused. The acting? Dixit's outstanding talent in dancing and poising with alluring expressions and grace had been seemingly, ignored. Sonakshi had appeared in very few scenes, which was kind of unfair. Aditya Roy Kapur has definitely made a good comeback after Fitoor, the chemistry between him and Sonakshi was pretty much commendable.
Coming to acting done by Varun- joke.
And Alia Bhatt- swift and sweet yet a novice at some points especially in the dance.
Final ratings:
Cinematography- 4.5/10
Costume, sets, designing-7/10
Music-8/10
Story-1/200
Concluding this, if you're a person who chooses quantity (insensible scenes , aristocratic and glistening set-ups and drama) over quality, go for it, wouldn't fail to entertain you.
I'd personally rate it a 2/10. We're going into the bin. Surprised at my patience level after two full years of struggle for Mains ๐.
