Love is felt differently by each of us
Sloan loved the idea of love because she never received any of it for the best half of her life. She just focused on everything good about all the bad situations she was in, because she believed she had to settle for what she gets in order to feel fulfilled, to feel loved.
For Asa, love is possession. It's something he had to own. Being raised by inconsiderate parents, and being taught the most absurd perceptions about humans, he had to have one person in his life that made him feel loved, kept him out of his loneliness, despite the fact that he was hurting the one person who had the potential to love him unconditionally.
Luke's love is peace, happiness. He's someone who protects. Being raised by a loving parent apparently taught him what love was and he carried the legacy forward with every step of the way. From loving someone who never was his to begin with, caring for her wellbeing even if he knew he couldn't have her, sabotaging his own life to protect the girl he loved, but wasn't his girl to love, to loving a child the girl gave birth to, without even knowing whether the the child was related to him or not by blood.
Love we give or receive can change us, reshape us. It builds us or destroys us. At the end of the day it's love we live for, yearn for, be it love for ourselves or others.
From Asa, to Sloan, to Luke, it only shows us how it's never too late to love, and be loved.
