The trailer betrays what makes this movie very good. It frames the movie as a creature feature with some sort of big, bad wolf. It's really about a man dealing with the breakdown of a long relationship and the stress it puts on his mental state. Theres hints of something supernatural but its more a study on a unreliable narrator, maybe its real or maybe he's losing it.
Set pieces are beautiful and the care put into the cinematography is very apparent, the setting of the rural south feels like a wild jungle creeping in. Some scenes do drag with establishing relationships because you're wanting to see what happens next.
I was expecting a very different movie, and I think that's where alot of the bad reviews come from. It is dialogue heavy with little action but frequently witty, clever, and funny. The characters all come across as likable and believable, their motivations and archs are well executed. 4/5 would recommend, it can be slow but it pays off in the end
