Okay so I’m aware that some find the topic disgusting and yah it’s awful what Evan does but this is something that happens. I and many others who have problems with lying can relate to him and for people to make him seem like a monster hurts so much. What Evan does is wrong yes, but if you put yourself in his shoes, he is invisible and nobody knows him. He is an outcast with crippling anxiety and he never had much parental guidance. It’s no excuse but it helps you see why he makes the mistakes he does. And if you see something that could change everything you dislike about yourself it’s so tempting to say no. He tried to tell them the truth but panicked and at first he did it to help a grieving family. And not to mention he didn’t have to start the Connor Project but he wanted people in his situation to know they arnt alone and wanted to help them.
However I do see peoples other sides and understand. If I were Connor it would hurt to see someone use my death as a way to get a girl. I understand the hurt and frustration from those who see that part, but you need to see that this is a huge part of struggling with mental illness and it’s not pretty but it is and will always be an ugly result of trauma and mental illness. This movie was meant to bring awareness to mental illness and it has done a damn good job and I do stand for that. It is not that romanticized part of mental struggles you see on social meidia and if you are not a person who is currently or has struggled with this, you do not get the right the make us feel like a monster for having our own personal struggles. If I have to hear one more person say “it’s disgusting and wrong” it is. That’s literally the point. It’s supposed to bring the side of mental illness nobody likes to see but this is how it is. Thank you and please understand we are not the monsters.
