Spoilery, so beware!
Overhyped movie filled with monotonous and repetitive rhythm and mood of scenes, 'it's whimsical so anything goes' brand of forced 'dark' comedy, very little justification to the most important twists / conflicts in the script, very convenient and difficult-to-believe sudden entry of characters and their transformations. As the film went on, the 'cool smiling casual' hero facade seemed overdone even for Rajni: it gets quite boring, and then on the other extreme, it becomes difficult to believe all the sudden violence being unleashed, in the midst this so-called comedy mood. Also the images are quite gory, and unnecessarily so. (Sorry Kill Bill!) For all this, there is not one scene where the hero actually fights! It really shows the extent the screenplay was 'made for Rajni', but what about the effort made to make it justifiable and believable? Taking Vinayakan, a powerful actor from Malayalam, and then overdoing his scenes and his acting to hype up the hero wasn't satisfying or even well done, and felt quite forced and artificial.. especially the begging, dancing, and his negotiations. Even the way most scenes were lit - bright and warm, and the slo-mo Rajini shots were very template - postcard ish, almost felt like a loong Instagram reel.
What I liked : The first few scenes with the grandson with Rajni being a home-bound grandfather, most of Rajni-Yogi Babu situational comedy and quips, a few one liners from VTV Ganesh, Rajni's overall get-up and costumes (not the flashback which was another logic-less mass hyping effort, in which he was almost sadistically violent). Mohanlal and Shivanna looked good, the BGM suited their entry.
Even morally, except for the forced finish in the end, the logic of the totally upright hero ganging up with former deadly gangsters who were 'reformed' by him during his past jailer stint in prison (how, when, where, what, why?) was very weak. Anirudh's music was overall trying to amp things up, but again getting repetitive. I missed the magic of the songs when I saw them on screen; I'd rather just listen to them. Too many different languages coming in and out made it look like a dubbed film in the second half. In the end, just another not-even-half-baked mindless masala Superstar fanboy sambavam attempt, Nelson style. May be I was expecting too much, looking at all the hype. I really hoped it would work for me! I still hope it continues to work at the box-office, for Superstar's sake! Hukum!
