This book was amazing. I'm a classic literature SNOB and I had to read this book for a class, and while I came into the book thinking that I'd hate it, that it would be like every other piece of "contemporary literature" that ends up being an offense to paper. I was *so* wrong. There are few titles which deserve the badge of contemporary horror, and this is one of them. It sucks you in with the seemingly flighty- yet intelligent -protagonist who is irresistibly attractive in mind and spirit, and then spins a yarn which might as well be that which becomes its own noose. It's a blend of The Fall of the House of Usher and the last two Resident Evil games. It's freaky. It's magnetic. It will take your hand and drag you down into its depths and you will have no chance of swimming to freedom.
While many of these reviews may portray the book in a way that could seem... intimidating to the average non-horror fan, it is important to note that this book could also be a fairy tale. With constant throwbacks to stories such as Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty, there are many parallels, of course, with roles switched and swapped around. With our protagonist as the knight in shining armor, and an unexpected character as our princess, Mexican Gothic holds an appeal to almost every prospective reader.
Sylvia Moreno-Garcia deserves all the praise and more for writing this book. I, personally, cannot wait to see more of her work and wish her all the best.
