Have I missed something here? If the film was supposed to highlight how uncomfortable and privileged life can be, then I would say the film did a brilliant job of this. Anyone that strips it down to being a beautiful story of nostalgia, coming ofo age and simpler times, just what? how? how were you not uncomfortable? It was racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, and glorified pedophilia. You can argue that it was 'of the time' but especially with the past couple of years we have had, is there a need for a film like this anymore? What purpose does it really serve in today's society? If anything, it just highlighted that we still feel it's ok to make these types of films.
I was very disappointed. I watched this in the cinema and many people in the audience laughed at the white man's overtly racist asian accent, and seemed to go silent at the anti-Semitic remarks. This suggested to me what society overall still feels is acceptable to find humourous and what we draw the line at. I nearly walked out.
Again, we can go back to the idea that it was of the time. But I think there are more tasteful ways of creating a story that reflects that society and is still respectful of today's.
If I could give it no stars I would.
