My grandfather was the publishing editor of the Gettysburg Times and The Gettysburg Compiler newspapers. He was very knowledgeable about the battle of Gettysburg and was a great battlefield tour guide for us. In all I ever learned about the battle, never was there much, if any, discussion about the lives of 2500 citizens that found themselves at the center of the greatest battle to occur on US soil. Try to imagine an invading army confiscating your food and livestock while taking refuge in your home and on your property. Imagine artillery set up in your front yard and snipers in your attic. Worst of all, imagine over 10,000 killed, 100,000 wounded and every building with a roof becoming a temporary hospital with dead soldiers and horses lying everywhere. If you ever wondered what it was like for a citizens caught in the middle of a nightmare, read this book.
