This sequel of 2014's reboot of possibly the world's most iconic monster develops a far reaching and more comprehensive backstory without giving in to blatant exposition. It features both likeable and unlikable characters (the masterful Charles Dance) that are quickly but pretty thoroughly developed, again simply through the movie's plot. Humor punctuates scenes from time to time without ever seeming out of place and they manage to address global warming without ramming politics down your throat.
I read some of the other reviews and think that these folks are either trolls, or just miserable people. Taking a very difficult genre to do well in and telling a compelling story, creating great CGI effects and making a theater full of people ranging from 8-55 years old chuckle and later loudly cheer isnt easy, and after a $2.99 home rental fee to see the 2014 Godzilla I was willing to pay the full price theater fare and was satisfied leaving the theater which is more than I can say about 5 of the 11 Star Wars films. The end credits hint of upcoming films including a Kong v Godzilla match up and unless they change the benevolent nature of the latter, I'll be rooting for the lizard. Personally, I loved the movie and hope that they continue to turn out compelling stories as I think they have the FX nailed.
