I don't understand. Most of the negative reviews for this movie are because of the length of it. That's like saying that turkey is bad because you can't eat the whole thing in one meal. The movie is long, but the pacing is nice. There isn't a scene in the movie that doesn't lend to the believability of the world it's set in.
The acting is well done and I find it easy to get wrapped up in the story.
The writing though, that's the best part of it all. There are scenes where you know these writers each had a personal experience with the loss of a loved one. The scene where Anthony Hopkins is talking about cold lamb sandwiches, they feel so authentic and true. "Not as chewy as roast beef, not as boring as chicken." The way loved ones leave us with the things they've influenced us with.
And then there's the scene where Joe is conflicted about taking her with him. He grabs her hand and is looking at it and she says, "If you're trying to tell me my future you're looking on the wrong side." it's brilliant.
He's struggling with the thought of what he is going to do as being wrong. Also the "side" meaning life, and death, like the other side. Not to mention how they repeat things to each other before and after death has gone.
The bad reviews for this movie are wrong, that's all it is.
