Iโm going to pour some water on these flames of overwhelmingly positive reviews (and there are some spoilers here, so beware!). Whilst Iโd agree that it was good fun as an action movie with stunning special effects, I think it suffers from been somewhat overhyped. And who else feels that these amazing FX are more of a crutch to support an average storyline, when the best movies use FX to enhance an already strong storyline? At the end of the day, itโs just another good v evil movie with good finally triumphant (surprise, surprise). Yes, itโs better than many in this genre, but letโs not get carried away. This is no classic. One obvious example is the use of time travel to rewrite the storyline to ensure the โbig finishโ demanded by the box office and Disney execs and shareholders (mission accomplished there). Itโs a cop out and a cheat that means anything can be done with the filmโs direction, safe in the knowledge that it can always be changed back to suit popular audience demand in the future! For example (and look away now if you want to avoid a major spoiler), when Iron Man finally checks out having sacrificed himself for the greater good of saving humanity (please!), thereโs understandable grief amongst his fellow Avengers. The same could be said of the earlier loss (here comes another spoiler) of Black Widow. But, why the long faces? Simply climb back into that time machine and change the outcomes for both characters. Easy. Wait, I hear you cry, that canโt be done because it would put adverse strain on the time/space continuum and probably require replacement of the flux capacitor. Says who? A couple of characters in the movie? What do they know, anyway? They were only saying that to try and make the ending seem more credible and to tie it off nicely. Please keep in mind that the whole thing is fiction (sorry to break it to the sci-fi geeks among you, but as things stand right now, time travel isnโt possible), so itโs just as feasible for the rest of the gang to go back and change the outcome (which is essentially how this movie came about after Infinity Wars) to save their fallen colleagues as for that not to be possible. Indeed, a few years down the line after the original cast have had a nice break (and are in need of a fresh inject of cash) itโs highly likely that will happen!
So, if you want to really enjoy this movie (and itโs still possible to do that), manage your expectations effectively and donโt get drawn into the marketing hype before hand. Itโs a bit too long, but when all is said and done there are worse ways of spending 5hrs (Kidding. Itโs about 2.5hrs....I think!)
