So enjoyable, so tragically good, probably one in my top 20 best Korean historical drama series I have ever watched so far.
So many profound plots and twists throughout with superb casting. It is really heartbreaking to see my cruel cool unmanly Kit Tae Bae die in an ever-so manly way. I like his character so much I was wishing he would be able to get away. He really steals the scene every minute he appears on the show for almost the first half of the series. Who cannot help but detest the make up and love his demeanor in swordplay. People were elated when he was killed but I was sad my heart wrenched. This goes the same when General Yi Sung Gye let the chance go with the white horse and has to go through all the hardship first before he decides to go on the right course for the people. It serves him right due to his indecisiveness.
A little touch on the love story for Pang Won and Boon Yi does not seem to be enough to warm any heart, too placid and businesslike to be romantic. The political marriage between him and Hae Dong family does not help. The ambition drives this character insanely murderous to his extreme.
And who cannot help but adore the shy giant Mu Yul who's so dreamy and always has an innocent smile on his dimpled cheeks and dancing scruffy hair. Just don't let his comical manner fool you that he is not capable with his sword or his prowess Gladiator-style. He grows to be solemnly heartless just like his master later on. Dang Se and he (and I can't forget that girl assassin Chok Sa Gwang too) look so fiercely cool whenever they wield their deadly metals. The clashing duels between them are unforgivably vicious.
50 episodes seem a lot but it's so easy for me to get through all without any fast forwarding. The series are so brilliantly directed, edited and acted. Younger versions for all the main characters are good-looking and talented.
The fight scenes are extraordinarily shot with exciting camera work, swift sword fights and choreography. The bloody scenes for the General and his group's assassination are truly unforgettable but forget to breathe during the whole ordeal.
The soundtrack aptly fits the modes of emotion in different scenes. The track when Dang Se and Yon Hee meet and kill their man from the brutal past is haunting.
The intermittent comic relief is cute and likeable but then it's all serious till the hearts ache towards the end.
A lot of killings, slaughterings, murderings, torturings, dead bodies dropping all around, right and wrong are a fine line, back-stabbings and betrayals are aplenty, nobody's hands are squeaky clean, no true friends or foes, in the process of getting to the new Cho Son.
Though a tad bit draggy and dodgy with scripts in some parts, especially in politics and other erratic bits and pieces, there's no other words to give this series enough praise, just simply a must-watch.
