All of these started with mothers. They treat their sons as Prince and treat their daughters as servants to them. Then the son thinks he deserves it and expects the same when he got married.
Same with the dowry. The dowry is mostly asked by mother-in-laws and sister-in-laws. Very seldom asked by the groom or by the groom's father. But they get the blame for it.
This is my observation, at least.
