I read this book twice...a wonderful description of womanhood and social hypocrisy, with the pure unadulterated perspective of a feminist child widow whose feminist approach deepened as she grew. She could see, question and act upon inbuilt gender bias and hypocrisy in the family and in society that is still accepted by many as indispensable part of life...infact it's not even taken note of even today...one loves the purity and innocence of Phaniyamma throughout the reading of this novel.
