so before I go on to say anything about this film, good or bad, It is imperative that I clarify that I never saw the film in it's entirety. I spent the first half of the film in my bedroom alternating between playing Subnautica, Subnautica: Below Zero, and Titanfall 2 while my father and brother watched the film in the other room.
my knowledge of the film's events and my subsequent opinion is incomplete to say the least, what I say about the film could be directly contradicted by the film so take/read this review with a grain of salt.
THE GOOD
once I sat down to watch the last 20-30 minutes of the film, the first thing I noticed was the stunning CGI. while various films in recent years also have incredible CGI, radioactive lizard vs big monke brings CGI complexity to a whole new level, with the usage of visible building destruction and direct physical interaction of kong and godzilla. while the godzilla and king kong CGI models interact very well, it would be shocking for a massive film like this to have models clipping.
another thing about the CGI is the amazing detail put into kong and godzilla, they both look completely real and appear very biologically possible if they're sizes could be accommodated. the action is also very entertaining.
THE BAD
due to the fact that i only saw the final act action scenes and a few small scenes about human characters, most of my opinions rely on assumptions. but from what i saw, this film suffers from a case of pacific rim: uprising, and uses a largely teenage and young adult cast. the jokes made during human scenes are funny but get stale quickly, and the actions each human makes seems unrealistic and too convenient.
kong needs help? humans are there with the exact equipment needed to help.
the primary villian is winning against the good guy? one of the humans happens to pull out an item vital to stalling the villian.
you get the point.
overall, this film is very entertaining when its about kong and godzilla, but very lackluster when focusing on the humans.
