After skimming through countless paid reviews glorifying Chhava, I finally watched it on OTTโand honestly, Iโm relieved I didnโt spend money at the theatre. The film is heavily overrated. It follows the same predictable formula of a typical Bollywood period dramaโoverstuffed with melodrama and lacking nuance.
The script itself was scattered, struggling to find cohesion or emotional depth. It seemed more concerned with grandeur than storytelling. Plus it apparently had a tinge of political motivation or influence.
That said, the film isnโt entirely without merit. Vicky Kaushal and Akshaye Khanna bring some much-needed gravitas to the screen. Their performances are the only real anchors in this otherwise forgettable film.
On the flip side, the casting of Rashmika Mandanna was baffling. Sheโs clearly out of her element hereโher Hindi diction is weak, and her dialogue delivery felt forced and flat. While she may shine in other roles, this one was simply not meant for her.
Even Diana Penty, whom Iโve often felt deserved better roles, left no impact. Unfortunately, this film didn't serve her well eitherโsome actors just donโt fit in this genre, and thatโs okay.
Overall, Chhava had potential, but it's lost beneath the weight of bad casting choices, a chaotic script, and a lack of originality.
