Not a paid review. Many spoilers. The one stars completely missed the mark, but let me start off by saying this review comes with a bias. The attributes and characteristics of Jane And John are painfully similar to the relationship I’m in, they lightly tapped into the differences and tribulations of an interracial marriage, Janes jealously towards Johns mother, work, and overall charisma is relatively common and overlooked in relationships. The “camping mission” scene where John feels like his pipes have finally burst and overspilling onto Jane touched a part of me, I was totally still and frozen with my own pride while watching it all unfold. The chemistry isn’t flashy or in your face, which makes it all the more real for me, see, chemistry is inconsistent, there are moments where the tension could be split with a knife, others where at the most quiet and still times they can laugh and be themselves, but with work, different love languages, the unhealed parts within both of them, touch on a different type of chemistry; or lack there of, a vulnerability but yet a fighting chance. Janes apprehension to not bring children into their world, and John taking it personally also striked something within me, a fight I’ve experienced and a pain with selfishness that can’t be described without experience. Men feeling overlooked in the say of child rearing isn’t up for discussion, and when it is it’s often times siding with purely the woman’s point of view. They beautifully and truthfully showcased both of their desires and narcissism. Spoiler: when they drank the truth serum, you could see all their walls melt away, a relationship built on black and white but the light from each of them just beams through. Then it crushes your expectations and leaves you wondering. This is exactly how love feels to me. And it was an honor to watch this film unfold with my partner. It brought on a lot of discussions and reopening wounds that never fully healed. If you’re in a contentious relationship, love action, drama, or looking for a vulnerable double edged sword of a show, you will love this.
