Homefront is different from a typical Jason Statham film. Yes, it's undoubtedly an action film, but what makes it different despite of a simple-looking narrative is the characterization of everyone in this film. Statham himself delivers a great performance along with the girl who plays his daughter. There's something so charming about their bonding that holds the film tightly. Every action sequence is backed by strong emotions and the choreography is simply outstanding.
While a lot of people regard the crime thriller "The Bank Job" as the true performance oriented Jason Statham film, I personally feel his characterization and performance was much more emotionally charged and grounded in this one. He felt powerful yet vulnerable at the same time, something we don't really associate with his characters. You feel for him, want him to be safe and cheer for him when he beats down the bad guys in his typical outstanding style.
But it's Kate Bosworth who does a real terrific job when it comes to performance. At first, you might even hate her character but the way the director has dealt with it with the passage of time is really praiseworthy. James Franco delivers a good performance as well. The film also features some really picturesque locales that are an absolute treat to the eyes. The BGM is also very good.
Homefront, while having a story that you might not have come across for the first time ever, is a masterfully crafted action film that excels in making us feel for the characters and delivering realistic, fast paced, breathtaking action sequences.
