I'm really puzzled at the overwhelming positive support for the show, but I really believe it is because people want to see more Percy Jackson on the screen rather than none. Unfortunately, unless Disney makes significant improvements in the filming of the show in the next season (which seems unlikely), I cannot, in good faith, promote this show to anyone. Here's why.
Firstly, the show claims to be a "faithful adaption" of the beloved book series, which is only half-hearted at best. While the show retains most of the important events, it changes many others, which alters the essence of the show and in certain circumstances, makes it much more boring (e.g. lore dumps through conversation rather than slowly building up through action).
Secondly, the show only has 8 episodes in the first season (not too sure about subsequent seasons) and each episode is roughly 30-40 minutes, which in my opinion is way too short. Any objective viewer would quickly feel how fast paced each episode is, and there isn't much time for the chemistry between the 3 main characters to be built and certainly dampens the experience significantly. As a book fan, I'm really disappointed about this.
Those are the two major flaws I believe the show has, there are others, but I think I won't be able to fit them into this review, so I'll just leave you with these two. The show does deserve a 2-star rather than a 1-star though, as it is the first live action adaptation of the Percy Jackson series in a TV show format, and I certainly think there's a real possibility of the show being much better in subsequent seasons (most mainstream TV shows fare pretty bad in the first few seasons).
Thus, my recommendation to you is: Read the books first! They offer much more character building and worldbuilding than the show does!
