I find this one of the truest poems in the English language. When a death occurs, I stand on my front porch and recite the Hebrew prayer, "Kaddish" and Dover Beach as I reflect upon my connection with them and its loss.
Once heard a tale of seven writers who would choose their favorite poem, by title, and thrown into a hat. Each would defend their choice. All seven listed Dover Beach. This was verified to me by the daughter of one of the writers.
I never tire of reading and pondering this poem. It enfolds you in its words and metaphors; it expresses you in your grief. It is clear in its beautifully scripted words.
