I am not sure why DK's recent works have gone downhill. He used to be on par with Stephen King and now he has watered himself down and become a lecturer instead of the great author we all know he is. I read for entertainment and to escape daily life for a little while. I don't need or want an author trying to dictate how I should feel about a character or a situation. I will decide that.
It has begun to feel like a chore to get through one of his books lately and that is a sad thing considering he was once one of my very favorite authors. Going home in the dark is chock-full of author asides telling the reader how to feel about things, people or situations as well as giving definitions of words, as if we can't look up those definitions for ourselves).
If the author purposely takes me out of the story every two or three chapters, I just won't read the book. And I didnt. I had to stop about 20% in. I've never done that with a Dean Koontz book before and I've read almost all his books.
I would recommend his older works all day long, but I just can't recommend this one at all.
