I get that this book tackles serious issues like addiction, abuse, and secrecy and yes, those things happen in real life. But the execution felt more like emotional chaos for chaos’s sake. The characters were exhausting: Simon is a volatile, emotionally stunted man, and Daisy enables his behaviour to the point of disbelief. I found myself increasingly frustrated by their choices and lack of growth. Maybe that’s the point but it just felt bleak, not insightful. The story dragged through repetitive cycles of dysfunction with very little payoff. I wasn’t shocked or moved - I could see what the book was trying to do, but for me, it didn’t land. Instead of emotional depth, it gave melodrama wrapped in misery. Not for me.
