The movie centers around a group of raped and otherwise abused women who, deprived of basic education and modern conveniences, are held, by their own fear, captive on a remote and obscure religious colony somewhereโฆ..? Judging by their accents, I assume this somewhere is in the U.S.
There is only one man visible throughout the entire movie. He is taking the minutes of the meeting since the women are, supposedly, illiterate. In spite of being illiterate, these women are very articulate and quote, with accuracy, many Bible verses.
Also, This is a farming community. Are the men all on vacation, giving these unfortunate women the freedom to meet in the barn to plot their escape?
Ultimately, the women decide to escape and all line up with their horses and buggies (a whole parade of them) in the predawn hours. Again, there would be men awake at this time doing chores, such as milking and feeding cows, and, Iโm sure, taking measures to stop these women from leaving the compound with their children, horses and buggies and such.
One touching moment occurs when the only whimpy man in the movie tries to teach, his soon-to be-gone love interest, how to navigate by the stars in order to read a map. Note to writer/directorโฆ.the Sourthern Cross is not visible from the north American Continent.
If this movie is intended to have a pro womenโs rights agenda, it fails.
I give it two stars because of the fine, if misdirected, acting.
