Spoilers!! I would watch this movie 10 times over rather than most of the rehashed garbage that makes up the majority of movies released over the past few years. In my humble opinion, if you found this movie boring then you werenโt paying attention. Yes the entire movie centres around the women debating whether to stay in their abusive situation and fight for their rights or leave and set up their own community elsewhere. Guess what? Thatโs not an easy decision (especially considering their lack of education and the thought of leaving those they love behind) and throughout the debate we learn more and more about the extent of the abuse theyโve been subjected to. They discuss the fact that itโs some of the men, not all. They discuss the fact that they all (men and women both) have been lead astray by a few power hungry elders and have permitted this power imbalance to dictate their existence to this point. In a way they are all โvictimsโ of horrible teachings. I found this film absolutely compelling. This is a fine example of excellence in film making and acting and it has been rewarded with 2 Oscar nominations. Congratulations Sarah Polley. Well done!
