*Spoilers*
There were a few good scenes that were nice and artsy sure but oh my god was it lacking. First off, he ate live fish before finishing jam/jelly? What? He ate the damn tropical fish before the dog food. The entire time I was saying โwhat the hell are you doing?โ He had no idea at all how to escape this pretty easily escapable place and almost killed himself for it.
The idea of the movie is basically the Midas Touch story. Where everything around him is gold but he now doesnโt have what he needs for basic survival. He just wants to go back to how life was before. He starts going into psychosis way too quickly which, ok maybe that could happen if he had conditions before.
There was a lot of really blatant symbolism, like the pigeon who was stuck outside also trapped. Him yelling that โweโre both pigeonsโ or something like that. There was some deeper stuff and a few โlolโ type things like the hallucination saying โmake yourself at homeโ โIโll catch you laterโ but for the most part it was nonsense.
I feel as though the artists who want to feel deep will see a person going into psychosis and be like โwow, omg this is the exact expression of the pain of livingโ
Long story short, if youโre a liberal arts student and you want something to pick as your favorite movie to be edgy Iโm sure youโll like this but seriously there are so many better movies.
Only reason Iโm not giving it 1 star is just because it was great acting, as usual, Dafoe played this really well. But the actual movie was very lacking.
