What an incredible documentary that speaks to so much of the history of Black lives in music, from soul, jazz, blues, gospel, funk, and an "era of psychedelicized R&B," all beautifully interwoven with the fashion/style, politics, and culture of the day. Director Questlove also does an amazing job of giving a nod to the Cuban/Puerto Rican influences that were crossing genres in Harlem and beyond. This movie was truly inspirational on so many levels. It's such a shame this footage has spent so long (50 years) in a basement, but I'm glad to have been given the opportunity and honor to see it now. To borrow from Nina Simone, there is a world that has been waiting for this movie, and it's quest has just begun... I have a feeling Questlove has much more ahead to offer this world, even beyond the expansive repertoire of all he has already created and re-created in his long, impressive career.
