I agree the movie was gripping and for me it had clear meaning. Don't read further if you don't want to know what happens. The movie starts with a young black man, Ben, who was fired for something he didn't do. Ben is angry and is berated as he talks on the phone to others who are close to him. As the movie goes on, seemingly random encounters between people in the film include a zealous Christian who judges others (and will not accept those who see the world differently than she does), a young white male who denigrates people of other races, and a small town policeman who is on fire about taking his country back. Alone again, Ben doubts himself and asks if god is there as he plans his suicide. In the end, the self-righteous people lose what is dear to them or harm other innocent people. The young black man (who has done nothing wrong) drives off down the road. For him, god was there.
