Nicely written novel on Jewish life in Lithuania as the Nazis pushed back the Soviets during WWII. The horror of the events of the time are revealed through just a handful of characters in one small town, each struggling in their own way to cope with powers beyond their control. I commend Mr. Kanovich for his insightful character renderings and fair treatment of a time and place truly handed over to the "Devil's Spell".
