Whilst many may state Kraftwerk as the most influential band, and listening to electronic music, for me it has to be JMJ.
Kraftwerk are rightly lauded, but the first out and out electronic albums I remember hearing as a kid was Oxygene and Equinoxe. My father worked at the PolyGram factory in the late 70’s, and brought the cassettes home, Oxygene was superb but Equinoxe captivated me. Its beauty was the textures of sound, they haunted me, they took me on a journey and probably laid the foundations for my love of music, electronic in particular.
Today, 40+ years later Equinoxe is still one of my go to albums, doing exactly the same as it did back then. It even drove me on and influenced my first ever album as Experiments & Observations on Electricity.
And today, whilst Kraftwerk haven’t released an album of note since Computer World, and are stuck on a nostalgia trip, Jean Michel Jarre is still releasing groundbreaking music.
