Being a fan of her YouTube channel, I was excited to see that she had gotten her own show. Having watched the past three nights and the prime time special, I have to be honest and say that I have mixed feelings on it.
There are so many positive points to Lilly getting her own show-she’s not only a woman, but a woman of color, a YouTuber that built up an audience all on her own that created these amazing opportunities for herself-and what I’m sure will serve as inspiration for so many viewers out there. (Myself included, being a woman of color).
That being said, I guess what I’m conflicted about is that what I have watched so far is not what I was expecting her to put out.
I understand that she is trying to move away from her Superwoman persona and make this show her own, but that persona is exactly why I watched this show in the first place. I wish she could find a way to bring an equal balance of the old and the new to this show.
On her channel, I laughed constantly with her skits and her lists of particular types of people mainly because (ie..”creepy dance club guy”) was all inclusive. He was any and all ethnicities. The jokes that she is telling on this show are constantly referring to “the white people” and instead of having me laugh, I’m rolling my eyes because it’s missing the mark for me and way too repetitive. They are coming off more as a put down instead of good humored fun.
I want to laugh-that’s why I’m watching- but could she please go back to doing it like before, where she generalized the “type” of person and made fun of us all, rather than pounding into the ground the white white white white white white....people. It’s taking away from the other great topics she’s trying to cover and instead of making the show edgy, it’s pushing it right off the cliff.
By no means am I a comedian, nor do I have my own show, but as a viewer (for me) I know what makes me laugh and for the most part, this show isn’t it-so far.
I will continue to watch in the hopes that she finds her groove (which will understandably take some time), listen to her fans and make some changes to what seems to be a popular critique about her show.
I’m sure if she was willing to give just a few tweaks here and there, her YouTube followers and brand new viewers alike, would welcome and embrace the amazing host she has the potential to be.
3 star rating for now with fingers crossed that some changes occur so I can give a higher rating in the future.
If not, I sadly might have to stop watching and go back to reruns of my girl, Superwoman.
Either way, I wish her nothing but the best.
