The Midnight Club is a teen drama about a girl who seeks alternative treatment for her cancer prognosis only to find herself in a haunted hospice.
If you were to replace the cancer element of this story with something more benign like paralysis; this entire show could fit snuggly on the Disney channel.
There is no hook. The character development is incredibly shallow. The jump-scares are ridiculously cliché. The acting is outstandingly disgusting (with the exception of Ruth Codd). The score is corny. The make-up and VFX are on par with a movie from 2003 with a $130k budget. The writing is lazy. And the plot is incredibly drawn out and watered down.
It's as if Flanagan said to himself, "Let's take all the things we did right on the previous shows and do none of those things."
Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass gave the viewer an initial discombobulation that was followed with highly granular character development. Those stray seemingly random pieces of information thrown at us in the beginning would then be stitched together as the story progressed in a way that maintained engagement and immaculate attention to detail.
The Midnight Club has none of these things. It draws a clear line between people who are able to recognize good horror and people who are just subscribed to the name; "Mike Flanagan".
Coming from someone who truly saw Flanagan as a genius I can say with confidence that Flanagan should be ashamed of this show. It is an artistic failure.
