You know it's bad when even Viola Davis's character is forgettable.
I'm a huge fan of the HG book series and the original movies. This one fell flat for me.
Admittedly, I don't like Rachel Zegler. I didn't like her in West Side Story and therefore had a hard time connecting with Lucy Gray right from the start. Something about her facial expressions is just too much. The back and forth with her talking in a fake Southern accent in one scene only to sound completely different in the next was off-putting. The snake song scene was the worst - so cringe. They didn't need to turn this into a musical.
Everyone else did a good job I think, but the pacing was off. The relationship between Snow and Lucy Gray was not believable. He sees her tweaking on video for 2 minutes during the reaping and they meet for 30 seconds at the train station and he's completely infatuated with her? There was zero development there so unsurprisingly, they had zero chemistry.
I would have loved to get to know the other tributes a little better. They were amazing. I wish they'd have cut the concert scenes in 12 and given us more time with them instead. I would have been way more invested if they'd been given more screen time.
2 stars because Lucky Flickerman was great and the environments were beautiful.
