A repetitive let down. This is a stain on the great franchise that is The Strangers.
I have to imagine the thought process was because it’s a prequel and it’s the same killers that they would have a MO and thus they would murder and taunt their prey in a similar way to the first movie. This isn’t an excuse to make it the same movie as the first one.
Besides some unique creepy shots and the location of certain events/items, this is the same movie as The Strangers (2008).
A couple who is deciding their marital status goes away on a romantic retreat, only to for the boyfriend to need to go to town for whatever reason. The girlfriend smokes and listens to records and hears bumps and crashes and sees things suggesting she’s not alone.
Eventually her suspicions are confirmed and the boyfriend arrives back in time for the killers to disappear. A game of cat and mouse ensues with the boyfriend eventually finding a gun and killing some one who isn’t one of the killers. Despite their best efforts they are both eventually caught and stabbed; with the boyfriend dying and the girlfriend having a fakeout death before being revealed to be alive.
I just described the 2008 original and the new 2024 movie in the same synopsis. Not to mention it’s advertised as a prequel where we see “how the strangers became the strangers” but the characters have modern technology in the form of smartphones and a nice luxury car.
TL;DR, an uninspired and unoriginal piece of somewhat watchable trash.
