As alot of the praise for this book will show, Stevens, ever the canny professional liar, has opportunistically positioned himself for this political moment to become the brave truth-teller for every big L Liberal whose interest in American conservatism never extended to understanding a body of ideas they disagreed with but was confined to finding self- congratulatory ways of slandering it.
Happily, his fidelity to deceit was fatally and doubly exposed, first with his involvement in the Tiki-Torch stunt on the final weekend of the Virginia Governor's race, and then his pathetic pretense once he was found out that he'd planned to reveal the stunt as the Lincoln Project's work all along, to what particular end was never made clear, rather what he was transparently up to, which was trying to tar Youngkin as having attracted the support of racists to help throw the race to McAuliffe.
I unreservedly recommend to all patriotic liberals that the nation has never needed you more, not the boastful unexamined side of you Stevens invites you to bathe in, and which will only swell the ranks of Trumpists and sustain his appeal, but your thoughtful, self-examined side. That is the side that will best position you to confront Trumpism before the American public and your own radicals as well, who share many habits of mind with those now in control of the Republican Party.
For us all, the hour is getting late.
