I really do not understand why this game is getting so much hate. In the story there are many things that happen that probably took everyone by surprise and were definitely heart-wrenching, but that is what a good game is supposed to be. (Spoiler ahead) I think that the reason that many people didn't like the game is because of Joel's death in the beginning. Lots of people are also saying that they just didn't like the way that he died, and they say that it isn't what Joel would do. They mention a scene in TLOU 1 that they didn't help people on the road and left them to die, but in this game technically saving Abby was also technically saving himself which completely sticks to his kind of selfish character. Personally I feel like they nailed everything in this game. The story was great, the graphics were incredible, and the attention to detail in this game is also amazing. I would 100% recommend playing this game for yourself to see the emotional roller coaster yourself and be able to explore yourself.
