This movie is impossible to love and extremely hard to like.
(Note ... some movie spoilers below)
Positives:
- very nice cinematography
- decent acting
Negatives:
- it did not follow ANY of the more interesting elements of the book; and the changes were NOT for the better and NOT interesting
--- Alia was completely redone as a bizarre unborn/embryonic force communicating telepathically with Jessica (a skill no Bene Gesserit has ever evidenced)
--- As a result, she didn't deliver the coup de grace which in turn set the stage for her own eventual destruction (in the book series)
--- No Hasimir Fenring - who had an important role in the book - though Margo Fenring appears
- the glory of the "fatal blow" was given to Paul to further the "all powerful white male savior" ethos pervasive in the movie .... (as well as in the book so that at least was faithful to Frank Herbert's novel).... but far too much off key hero worship of Paul ... before the script had elevated him to that level
---- The Fremen look no better than 19th century Bedouins ... WTH
---- we are 10,000+ years into the future, but almost zero advanced technology was evident
--- no mention of the interplay of religion (Zen Sunni vs Bene Gesserit vs Orange Catholic Bible, etc.) vs. politics
--- Nothing about the Spacing Guild (though there were glimpses in the first movie)
--- absolutely nothing about Ix or the Bene Tleilax
--- very little about the Bene Gesserit aside from some sinister remarks from RM Mohiam
--- didn't see one Guild heighliner or Navigator
- gratuitous mentioning of the Great Houses and imperial politics
- FAR FAR FAR too much time on silly desert scenes
- Devoted lots of time to go back and forth between Fremen communities and ignoring everything else about the planet
- As another poster mentioned, almost no information about melange... then entire reason for the relevance of Arrakis
- Overall, it was ponderous, plodding and a snoozer
Just really a sad movie. A complete let down for anyone who's a Dune series fan.
