Eleanor was selfish. Indiana saved her life multiple times and despite this she stayed the same. The movie portrayed her character as an all-round untrustworthy and terrible person, yet they still tried to sell her as one of the good-guys. She lied and betrayed indie continuously, but still indy, for some reason, trusted her, even though she was clearly untrustworthy. Okay, she did go back for Indiana near the climax of the film, but once again managed to show her selfishness. Despite the fact that indiana wanted to stay in ancient rome, around the civilization that he had loved and studies for his entire career she instead punches him in the face and brings him back to 1969. Here they not only reiterated Eleanor's character, but also (in my opinion) missed out on a great opportunity to tie up the indiana jones franchise nicely.
More than this they tried to make her character funny but fell flat in a big way.
I also believe that the eleanor-indy combo didn't work as well as other combinations in the older films. In the originals indies sidekicks were usually just normal people, who were reasonably incompetent in adventures. They make the female companion rival indy in skill and competency which may fit with the modern feminist narrative, but didn't have the same comedic or entertainment value. It just felt it was mssing something.
They also failed in developing the young boy's character. Didn't know much about him, was boring, didn't really add much etc.
Like I mentioned earlier the ending was dissappointing. I really felt like if he had stayed in syracuse it would have been a nice ending to the franchise. Instead eleanor punches him??? against his wish and takes him back.
Despite these criticisms, this was a fun action-packed adventure that I really enjoyed. The opening scene was awesome, comparable to some of the most creative and suspenseful scenes in the indiana jones franchise. This wasn't the only great action scene in the movie either. It started very strongly.
Mads mikkelson was awesome. Such a great actor, and was so well written.
harrison ford I also loved like always. Was kind of a grumpy old man but in an amusing way.
Time went by fast watching this film. Engaged to the end.
edit - I just realised she's called helena lol
