I discovered the Outlander books about 2 years ago, and busted right thru all 10, made sure I always got the next in hand from one of our libraries so I wouldn't have to wait a minute to get to get to next book. Watched seasons 1 & 2 all at once. Watched each episode twice because they were so dense, and usually discovered something else second time thru. Went full Outlander- speaking in Scottish (ken, dinna, verra) in my head.
Yes, the ending of Episode 1 WAS jarring and upsetting with America the Beautiful- hard to watch. First reaction was that use of that music was WRONG.
But then I thought about the almost "sappy" 2 heads looking west while Claire explains, the American Dream, and discussion of native Americans- and it seemed like multiple perspectives of America were expressed.
I realized the episode was balanced - we all see what we want to see, and react to what hits us in the gut. And that of course Diana G approved the intent and effect of that episode.
We usually understand & react to things differently 20 years after reading, writing, viewing or experiencing something for the first time- and it's appropriate to reflect today's world while remaining true to the heart of the books.
