This conversation between two stellar poets, Ferry and McGinn, did fill me with birds. The chirps and whistles of poetry lift the spirit and rise up again and again in me when I least expect it. These are voices I can believe. Voices I want to carry around with me. Voices that engage and trust me, the reader, with the most delicate of details. They not only comfort and soothe but are frank and forthright, which is more affirming than sugar-coated platitudes often passed off as comfort. The honesty is palpable because they are filled with an undying desire to pass on wisdom and all the unconventional beauty of being a sentient being. Being privy to this exchange feels like being seated at the adult table for the first time. McGinn’s straight-shooting storytelling combined with Ferry’s reflective dreamscapes make for a deep conversation. When themes leave and then return, we get a deeper and wider perspective of what really going on: an “as the crow flies” point of view combined with “the man on the street” point of view is powerful. McGinn and Ferry are excellent poets because they are both deep listeners and staunch conveyors of the credible and the incredible.
